Studio Work ABOUT my art & others

  strips of scrap matboard collaged all over prior to cutting up. No plan, no preconceived idea - using up scrap ephemera and gelli print fragments. The revitalisation of the project here. 53 pieces cut ready to pull the little design together - each one assessed on its own. Title of the project :  FROM HERE TO THERE.

  Cant wait to see what happens with these.  I took my indoor plant - Fatsima Japonica - and planted it outside next to the creek.  She is very happy there, doubling up each year, and this is the first year i noticed these berries.  They were harvested and wrapped up in the eco dye cloth - surprises in the unbundling - maybe tomorrow !. I grabbed an armful of WHITE cloths, scraps and a blanket, soaked 3 separate buckets, 1 with onion skins, one with avocado pits and skins and a third with gum leaves from the forest.  I decided to commandeer my studio coffee urn (i will get a kettle!) and started heating up a brew.  (above:  a table runner - onion skins) Planning now to keep going with more white cloths but also to see /experiment with citric acid (as a bleacher) and copper sulphate to adjust colours ... fun!  loving the woven cloth and how the different textiles pick up the colour. that cloth to the right of the woven piece is a lovely rich colour. more lovely rich colour- waiting to see how it dries this was an overdye but nothing seemed to have happened so it will go into another pot today this piece started out well but its got a bit blotchy from the onion skins - will look at another process to adjust this one loving the beige colour in the blanket and the rich oranges (onion skin) although i di...

  monoprinting continues using a glass plate and/or geli plate exploring colour and pattern combinations.  

 Clearing away and tidying up today - assessing a few things that have been undertaken in the studio this week - lots of monoprinting using the gel plate and a glass sheet. loving this one (below) ... a 'find' amongst the roller clean up sheets - a few tweaks and it created itself.  small piece - oil and acrylic on 300gsm. a few images of playtime (below)- creating sheets of colour, exploration and mark making on various papers including archival tissue.   and a studio walkaround here. in the comments below do let me know what you think or better yet, what are you doing in the studio?

  Spring brings in colour and vibrancy with the waratah in full bloom against a backdrop of forest with wattle and gum trees.  a quick sketch following a few days of walking past the waratah as i head up the hill to grab a coffee.

these little pieces on Japanese papers are trials/play in the studio this week - enjoying switching to oils after months of monoprints using acrylic on the gel plate.  see previous posts here and the 'what if' premise, here   

I ordered book board - archival acid free - but got the thickness wrong (no surprise there).  It was so thin i could not use it for book covers at all ... so i went into my default 'what if' ... and a book idea percolated to the surface of my brain.   here it is in progress. working on another 'what if' book idea - for a workshop - going to finish the idea first and then send out information on a workshop to make the book (contact me if you are interested in getting update email regarding the workshop and details)

Two prompts crop up in my practice, every day.  PLAY and WHAT IF?  As part of a series i am currently thinking through i focussed on a a vintage vase  - this one.          >>>> It started with a simple drawing  then explored on a gel plate. It went off in other directions .... 'play' Going back to the geli plate I went to 'what if' AND play. Looking again at 'what if' and the next one. so many projects on the go (always) - a few here, some still in progress, others merely an idle thought.  my work is research and process based so there is much experimentation and intuitive 'doing'.  images here of asemic writings, paintings in progress, books completed and in progress, slow stitching and chemigrams. find our youtube channel with various playlists including art and artist books  let me know what you think.

 Well that took me back - updating my sites I came across the one i created 18 years ago.  The site is called FOUNDart series. The idea and thoughts as it evolved into different travel experiences. and it goes like this.  the first post titled 'the idea - 2007 Foundart Switzerland'  and says : i am travelling to Switzerland in August to spend a month with my daughter and her partner who live there and my initial idea of 'doing' art clicked finally this weekend ... i had been thinking for a while i would like to make a 'found art' series where i take small bits of art that look like finished pieces - small as in business card size - and have my website details on the back that tells the story of the 'found art' series and then to leave one at places along the way on my trip to switzerland and other places - so create and take 30 pieces and 'lose' one a day telling the story on the website. Ferns collected by the creek and printed on the gelli plate and mono printing, digital prints, chemigrams & textile prints. I made  a short video of this prototype for the fern book. LET ME KNOW what you think. 

I am infatuated with 'place', a sense of place and our place within it and that art is a collision of the intellect and the visceral.  Abstraction excites me.  The struggle, in painting, continues to align concept/vision with ability, the technical aspects. This is why I work every day. The mornings are for computer work, admin, tidying (maybe), sorting, research and reading/writing. Working daily, on various projects and ideas I paint in the afternoons, across media including oil, acrylic, pastel and watermedia. Looking back on the last year, the struggle to abstraction continues.
