Mum's Tarot Cards

Image
I have a set of mum's tarot cards which i dont use but i like the creativity of the imagery and what they may mean. It's not a full set and they are newer than the ones i remember from my childhood which i think came from my Granny in Hungary. I wish i had those ! This set mum gave to me many many years ago - i think she thought I might play with the gift of reading but my left brain always took over. In recent times during de-stashing whirlwinds I found them and this week decided to do something with them. I created a A book of tarot cards that turned out nicely. I have the images below of a few steps in the making. and this link will take you to our you tube channel showing this book in its final form with the box. Do let me know what you think. Materials : tarot cards  a long sheet of heavy weight paper/card - i used 26 inches long and the height is exactly the same as the height of a tarot card bookbinders glue, bone folder book board  fancy papers to cover boards ma...

Day 12 of looking back at projects - chemigram

Image
Dedicated to #13 ..so, New Year reflections - 13 days of looking back on 13 projects over the last year Day 12 - chemigram. 2024 i discovered chemigrams and played (a lot) ... love what comes from process based art play. (wikipedia) Process. A chemigram is made by  painting with chemicals on photographic paper  and lies within the general domain of experimentation in the visual arts. It requires the use of materials from silver halide-based photography (light-sensitive paper, developer, and fixer), but it is not a photograph.

Wintering in the Studio

Image
During the last 2 years since we moved here i am steeped in exploring our environment - wonderful tracts of a mix of wattles and gum trees, forest, flat paddocks and a creek. In an effort to delve past the broad expanse which is so BIG i have gone to my collections of found flora, leaves, branches etc and began the #pocketfinds. It seems i have been doing this kind of collecting, recording, photographing for many years but recently found the perfect name for it.  A few here taken the last few days. click on image to enlarge.  a short post at Regent Park blog includes artist books in progress  here AND DONT FORGET OUR YOU-TUBE CHANNEL - art and lifestyle of an artist newly discovering #countryliving we live with a dairy cow in retirement # Snowcone there are some videos on bookmaking, monoprinting, textiles, workshops etc THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE (please let me know if any links do not work)

Found Poetry OR collage to Cloth

Image
There is something about slow stitching - ie by hand and not sewing machine - that i love. it can be done anywhere, any time, while chatting with others, alone in silence at dawn or outside in the sunshine, in front of diversions like the TV etc. It can be meditative and as it grows slowly it can become satisfying. Musings on Found Poetry took me to thinking about collage and the slow stitching i do each evening - the pieces become a collage of cloth over time. Cloth is 'found', picked at random and added to with stitch and /or other cloth or even same cloth torn up and added to itself creating texture and a collage of elements. Examples here show what can be done with a minimal range of stitches that i use - that being straight stitch or a derivative of it such as couching, cross stitch, seed, backstitch, wrapped stitch and sometimes knot stitch. Often texture is created with stitch but also with layering of cloth, such as in these examples that include weaving strips into a...

from TASMANIA to TOKYO

Image
in this time of looking back in order to move forward in my daily doings in the studio i found this altered book that i created during travels from Tasmania to Tokyo to catch up with family. A wonderful trip - so lovely to spend time with family filled with new sights, sounds and smells This is an altered book ... a 1963 (abridged) copy of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". I had a great time re-reading this book whilst altering it during my time in Tokyo. And how wonderful to explore all the sights and find new places to see art, gardens and fish ! I am a quiet fan of Koi and goldfish. I attended galleries in small alleys, big exhibitions in magnificent buildings, found sculptures and outdoor happenings, an antique shop and great food. Not so great coffee except my daughter had an excellent coffee machine at home so i could start the day filled with vigour. In this altered book pages include collage, additional new 'pages' that fold out, windows, mark making, fou...

THE LURE OF THE FOUND

Image
T his skink (it is a skink?) on my studio floor today - I picked him up and before putting him outside i took a photograph. And then i googled - yes its a skink .. a common garden skink ... common? - soooo subjective. but if it means there are many then yes, this skink is common. fascinating to explore colour, shape, texture, those feet ...and i have seen one or two running around without that pointy end of the tail. I believe they drop off when 'caught' and later regrow. i have also seen a blue-tongued lizard here at our new place but didnt have my camera with me. hope to find him/her some day and show you. New place new discoveries having moved recently to the country, regional Tasmania, yet on the very outskirts of towns. also found ... this nest - no idea what type of bird but love the fragility yet strength of this home for birds. so much to appreciate in delicacy, shadow, form, texture, tone. And that touch of greenery. i found it on the floor after a particularly...

A fun exercise to get to know your friends and yourself. Check out the books in your library and start to build a portrait of who you are. Let a friend look through your bookshelves and come up with who they think you are. Build the books up with titles facing you, creating a portrait of a kind and take a photograph of it. first image for me, reads: Collage: a new approach  from here to there the bandaged image cut & paste, 21st Century  collage weeds altered curiosities building a picture. The second one - reading : handmade books and cards eco books you are here drawing water painting abstracts pockets and corners I would love to see some of yours
